Short answer: anywhere from a few years to a few decades, and the spread is almost entirely explained by what the machine is made of. Espresso machines aren't like phones, where everything ages together — they're plumbing. Hot water, pressure, minerals and seals. What the hot path is built from decides how long the machine lives.
What the internals are made of decides everything
Stainless steel and copper boilers, copper piping, standard Italian internals — these machines last many years. That's the whole thesis, and it's why the prosumer Italian machines cost what they cost. A copper or stainless boiler resists corrosion; brass fittings and copper lines handle decades of thermal cycling; and "standard internals" means exactly that — the E61 group head on a Mara X or Appartamento is a design in continuous production since 1961, so gaskets, valves, springs and pump parts are commodity items any competent technician can source and fit. The machine outlives any individual component because every individual component is replaceable.
Heating blocks are the opposite trade. Thermoblocks and thermojets — what you'll find in Brevilles, our own Couplux CP239, and most machines under R12k — heat a small water path on demand instead of holding a boiler at temperature. Brilliant for 20-second heat-up and low purchase price. But the block is a narrow aluminium water path that scales up faster than a boiler, it's rarely economical to replace, and parts support for consumer machines typically fades within a decade. These machines don't last as long, and no amount of care fully closes the gap.

Those are honest ranges, not warranties — anything can happen after enough years, and a well-treated entry machine can outlive an abused prosumer one. But across everything we've sold, delivered and helped maintain, the materials rule holds.
What actually kills machines
Scale, overwhelmingly. Most of South Africa's inland water is moderately hard, and every litre boiled leaves its minerals behind. Scale insulates heating elements until they burn out, narrows waterways, and jams valves. It's also almost entirely preventable: use filtered or appropriately treated water and descale on schedule. Lelit ships a water softener filter in the box with the Victoria and Bianca for exactly this reason. This one habit is worth more than every other maintenance task combined.
Neglected rubber. Group gaskets and O-rings are consumables — they harden and crack on a 1–2 year cycle. A R100 gasket ignored becomes a leak, becomes corrosion, becomes a real repair.
Power. SA-specific and real: surges when load-shedding ends are hard on PIDs and control boards. A basic surge protector is cheap insurance on any machine with electronics.
The maintenance that earns those numbers
Daily: flush the group, wipe and purge the steam wand. Weekly: backflush (on machines with a three-way valve) and clean baskets. Every 1–2 years: gaskets and shower screen. Descale on your water's schedule, not the calendar's. That's it — an hour a month protects a 20-year asset.
The verdict
Buy by boiler material and you're really buying lifespan: a heating-block machine is a 5-year test of how serious you are; a copper- or stainless-boiler Italian machine with standard internals is a 15-year companion that asks only for clean water and fresh gaskets. Sometimes the answer is "fix the R400 gasket, not buy the R40,000 machine."
